Introduction to Upholstery

Come be inspired! Learn basic upholstery skills while having fun! Home Décor Learning Center will provide all the materials to learn how to reupholster a dining room chair seat and a sprung footstool! You will tear-down and reupholster these items using the appropriate tools, learn tool safety and the techniques needed to complete both projects. Skills taught include webbing, attaching and tying springs and applying stuffing and fabric. This class is the prerequisite for Beginning Upholstery. Lab fee: $15 due at first class meeting.

Beginning Upholstery

This class is for students who have completed Introduction to Upholstery or the equivalent experience with instructor’s approval. This class is designed to build upon learned skills to produce professional quality results. Learn how to select, measure, cut and apply final fabric. Discussion and teaching moments will revolve around the students’ projects. Projects can be stored on-site while currently enrolled in class. Lab fee: $10 due at first class meeting.

Continuing Upholstery

This class is for the student who has some upholstery experience. Students are expected to have a basic knowledge of upholstery techniques including fabric layout, welting, cushions/zippers, webbing and springs. Students should be familiar with sewing and have completed at least 2 sessions of Beginning Upholstery or the equivalent. The instructor will go over some advanced techniques and more complicated projects with the group. These class sessions will have an “open” format. Students are expected to be able to work independently after some instruction of new or more complicated techniques. Lab fee: $10 due at first class meeting.

Cushion Sewing

Do you have window seats that need cushions?  What about your outdoor furniture or wicker/rattan pieces that need new cushions?  In this class you will sew a boxed welted cushion from start to finish. You will cut your fabric, make welting and insert a zipper, sew the entire cushion and stuff it.

Slipcover a Chair!

Custom slipcovers tend to be quite expensive, so learning how to make them makes good financial sense.  In this class you will make a slipcover for a chair of your choice.  Chairs are always a good choice, whether a dining chair or armchair for the living room or family room.  You will need your fabric before class starts, so please check with the instructor for yardage requirements.  Bring to class the project you want to cover, the fabric and scissors. Lab fee: $30 due at the beginning of class.

No sofas please.  However, the skills learned in this class can be applied to slipcovering a sofa.

The Sewing Machine

Ever wanted to know how a sewing machine works? No need to be a sewer with experience, or even a sewer at all! All you need to take this class is a desire to understand sewing machines. From why you thread the machines a certain way to how the stitch is formed, this class is bound to teach you something new! 

You may bring your sewing machine if you wish.

Operation of the Sewing Machine

Learn how to wind a bobbin, thread a machine, change a needle, etc. This class is for those who are just getting into the world of sewing, whether its garment, quilting, or home decor, you need to know the basics of operating a sewing machine. We will practice control over speed and movement. What you learn in this class will help you no matter which direction you branch out to.

You may bring your sewing machine if you wish.

Serger Panic!

Uh oh! Thread broke on that serger? This class will get you comfortable with threading and operating a serger, as well as practicing the basic uses of the various stitches.

It is encouraged you bring your own serger to class, but not required. This class is also good for those thinking about buying a serger.

Make This Pouf

Here is a fun project that will be useful as well as cute!  We will make a pouf any size you would like.  The one pictured is approximately 18" across and 18" tall, filled with Styrofoam pellets so that it is sturdy enough to sit on without sinking down.  You may choose whatever filler you wish - just be sure to contact the instructor at least 3 days before class begins if you want something different than Styrofoam pellets.  Bring up to 8 different fabrics 1/2 yard each, minimum 1 1/2 yards of your choice of fabric, or choose from a selection at HDLC.

Introduction to Longarm Quilting

This class is designed to familiarize you with the basics of using a longarm quilting machine. You will learn how to mount your quilt, thread the machine, and wind bobbins. There will also be a chance to practice stitching with the machine so you can feel more comfortable when you are on your own.

Custom Window Coverings

Do you have a window covering project in mind that may require some instruction or help to complete? This class is designed to give you personalized assistance with your window treatments. Roman Shades, drapes, swags valances and cornices are a few of the many types of window treatments you can make. Bring your ideas to share with the instructor. Basic sewing skills required.
