Home Décor Fabrics – Fabric Cleaning Codes
S: Cleaning code “S” means dry clean only. You may spot clean stains using a water-free solvent cleaner. Test first in a hidden area. Use the water-free solvent cleaners in a well-ventilated area and keep away from any flames. Use a hair dryer to dry the spot you just cleaned. If the fabric is a velvet, suede, or other napped fabric, use a soft brush to help keep the nap looking undisturbed. NOTE: Most upholstery fabrics are cleaning code “S”.
W: Cleaning code “W” means water-based cleaners only. Fabrics with cleaning code “W” are the easiest fabrics to clean. You may spot clean using a variety of water-based shampoo or foam carpet and upholstery cleaners with a brush to agitate the cleaner or an upholstery attachment on a carpet cleaner. NOTE: Do not use a cleaning solvent as it may permanently ruin the fabric.
WS: Cleaning code “WS” means water or solvent based upholstery cleaners can be used. Pre-test in a hidden spot to determine which cleaner will work best on that particular stain. For overall dirt, a professional cleaner would be best.
X: Cleaning code “X” means you can only clean by vacuuming or light dusting. The fabric is not cleanable with water or solvent cleaners.
